Covers as good as the original…

It isn’t very often that I think a cover of a song is as good or better than the original. It often comes down to how committed the later artist is to the song.

This has to be one of the best covers I’ve ever seen. I just wish I could buy this song on Amazon to support them.

I really don’t have anything impressive that I did to make this picture happen. it was really just looking for the right picture at the right time.

I took it at the Heritage Park (This is the Place Monument) in Salt Lake City. I really thought the mountains, the lake and the train between them made for a fantastic shot. Hope you like it.

My Restaurant Style BBQ Ribs

Hello All,

I’ve had some requests for my BBQ rib recipe. These instructions should produce some good results for pretty much anyone.

You may notice the omission of Honey in this recipe. You are absolutely free to add this. It really depends on how sweet you like your ribs. Honey can be glazed onto the ribs at the end of the second “session” and bake for an extra 15 minutes.

You’ll also probably notice that these instructions are for the oven. This is because the oven is a more precise cooking instrument. This recipe doesn’t require particularly high heat, so a barbeque grill isn’t absolutely necessary.

If you know your barbeque grill really well (and can be accurate within 15 degrees), feel free to use it. A grill may be especially handy if you want to omit the liquid smoke and go with a mesquite wood or briquette (this method would be less foolproof, but would make you a BBQ legend if you can pull it off repeatedly).

Please feel free to let me know of any alterations/experimentation/inspirations. I absolutely want to know if you have good or bad results, so I can tweak this recipe to be more foolproof.

Ingredients:

1 rack pork spare ribs!
1 cup ketchup – I believe this ingredient originated in China, but can’t prove it entirely
1/2 – 1 1/2 cup sugar – The amount wholly depends on how “diety” one feels at the time of cooking
1/4 cup A1 or Heinz 57 Steak Sauce – It depends on your political affiliations
1 tsp garlic powder – It’s better if you have 2 cloves finely minced, but any garlic is better than no garlic
1 Tbs Worcestershire sauce – I almost omitted this, because it’s impossible to spell correctly
1/2 – 1 tsp liquid smoke – You can change the amounts depending on how deep in the South you want your ribs to taste like

Instructions:

Fill a 12” deep sauce pan with 2” of water. Bring the water to a boil and carefully place the rack of ribs in the pan as flat as possible. The ribs don’t have to be covered completely. Let simmer/braise for 20 minutes.

Combine the rest of the ingredients into a bowl and mix thoroughly.

Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.

Place the ribs flat on a cookie sheet (after the 20 minutes of braising has elapsed). Brush approximately 1/2 the total amount of sauce onto both sides of the ribs.

Put the ribs into the oven uncovered and let bake for 1/2 hour.

Brush the remaining sauce onto the both sides of the ribs (don't be shy). Then place the ribs back in the oven for another 1/2 hour.

I took this picture(s) at the top of Timpanogus A & B falls (no not from the top of the mountain). It’s actually 3 pictures that I took with my Nikon in panorama mode and stitched together with the panorama picture maker software.

I think it makes for a true representation of the view from the top near the falls.

The panorama mode is nice because after you take your first picture it shows an opaque portion of the right edge of the first “frame”. This lets you line up your next frame so that you can make sure you don’t have any missing portions of the shot.

On this hike I also learned the value of being able to manually adjust shutter speed and aperture. You can really get a lot of the pictures right straight from the camera. I noticed that in the past I had to rework pictures with Photoshop in order to get contrast and color balance right.

With the right shutter speed and aperture settings, you can cut out probably 50% of the occasions to have to fix things on the computer. This picture, of whatever kind flower this is, is a good example of no-touch picture taking.

Next I’m going to experiment with some of the different color processing algorithms used to process the images in the camera. I’ll post some examples of the successful and not so successful attempts.

New Camera Part II

So, I originally bought Fuji Finepix S1800 for my birthday, but the pictures weren’t coming out very crisp. In fact, I thought they were blurry under many instances that should have produced nice pictures.

Fortunately, I bought the camera from Costco, and they have a 90-day return policy on electronics. This is an outstanding policy, because it sometimes takes a long time to figure out if a piece of equipment, like a camera, will do a good job.

I decided to go with a Nikon P100 10 megapixel 26x Zoom camera. The Fuji was 12 megapixel with 16x zoom. The megapixels didn’t matter as much to me as the picture quality, and the difference in zoom was phenomenal.

I took some pictures this weekend and thought I’d post a couple so you could see how good they turned out. Most of the pictures I took were outside, and looked great even without the flash.

The duck and the rooster I took at wheeler farm. I was at least 40 yards from the duck and 20 from the rooster. The details in the feathers are great and the colors are really rich.

This is the Angel Moroni Statue on the top of the Salt Lake LDS Temple. I was at ground level about 5 floors down to the east of it. I was worried the statue would be indistinct and washed out by the sun, but the details and color turned out pretty good.

So, I think this new camera is a keeper.

Lately, I’ve just been sharing links to articles or other blog entries that I’ve found interesting. In an attempt to keep this as more of a blog than a Internet Travel Log, I’m going to attempt to generate better content.

To that ends, I’m going to post some interesting pictures that I take. I recently got a new camera. It’s a Fuji Finepix S1800. I’ll post a more intense review later as I learn the ins and outs of it.

We went to the aquarium the other day and I got a couple of nice pictures. I thought I start out my new blogging resolution with these:

The picture above was untouched. I thought the camera did a decent job.

This lion fish picture has had an auto contrast filter applied. The original contrast wasn’t that much different, but I wanted to see how different the cameras “natural” settings were from Picasa’s auto contrast filter.

Feel free to comment and let me know what you think about the way cameras process images versus photo editing software. I think I may also look at the different ways photo editing/cataloging software treat images.

Free anti-virus from Microsoft.

As many of you know, I am a big fan of free. Especially free utilities that make computing a little bit nicer.

Microsoft has just announced a new anti-virus application that will come in at first in a beta and possibly end up being free when it’s released.

I don’t know if this will get them as far anti-trust matters are involved, but I say let them give us stuff for free if they feel like it.

How the internet works

The Internet is made up of a lot of nodes.
Individual users, Internet Service Providers, Backbones (Universities, Gov't, Telcos), Underwater Cable to Other Continents
Each computer to some degree is assigned an IP address (ex.: AOL.com -> 205.188.142.182, 64.12.50.151, 64.12.193.85, 207.200.94.38)
Some IP address are mapped to domain names (ex.: AOL.com -> 205.188.142.182, 64.12.50.151, 64.12.193.85, 207.200.94.38)
DNS Servers - Are the indexes in which IP address are matched up to Domains
A host of servers or computers may sit behind an IP range or Domain
Entities, usually companies, map their given IP address to a specific name

Common attacks

Virus - Embeded in .exe or document file, attachments to e-mail
Phishing - Social engineering designed to trick you into giving sensitive information (Bank, Credit Card, Health Info.)
DNS Poisoning - Non-authoritative DNS server (replacing the trusted lookup server with a compromised one)
Cross Site Scripting - Browser attack in which on site grabs parallel data from a concurrently browsed site (Don't browse while you're doing activities that require security
Buffer Overrun - The router is sent large amounts of bad data in order to overwhelm the router and put it in a defaulted state that can be taken can be taken over remotely

Securing your DNS

OpenDNS
1. Filter out by type
2. White/Black list
3. Growing community screening new sites and classifing them
Make sure you use the settings recommended by your ISP (usually obtain from DHCP)

Securing your network

Wired
1. Make sure your Router is properly secured with a strong password.
2. Make sure you only allow people you know well on to your network
3. Keep your important personal data behind some sort of strong password
4. Make sure each machine on your network requires a password to access
5. Keep your router firmware reasonable up-to-date

Do not over estimate people's will power where illicit/pornographic material is involved
Go through the logs of sites visited generated by the web safety/filtering software regularly, either weekly or semi-weekly (available with OpenDNS, and Microsoft Family Safety Software)
Phones/SmartPhones/iPods are computers, treat them as such, monitor their access and usage

Use “Private Browsing” when doing things like banking or private health related activities, only do one activity per private session, after the activity is done, close the private browsing session and open another if you have another activity to do

Some security like Window User Account Control, will be somewhat annoying, but it does add a measure of safety; The worst security you have is the security you disable

What to do if you think you've got problems

Unplug the internet connection
Run virus scan
If you've recently installed something prior to the problems, uninstall it
Run Task Manager and see what seems to be running (advanced)
You may have to have someone take a look at it.

For those of you who haven't had a chance to use Google Maps Street View, I would have to say that you're missing out.

It's pretty nice to be able to really see the building or place that you might be headed to. I've used it a few times, and I like knowing what the destination building actually looks like.

Google has hired a fleet of cars/vans/trucks, with cameras on top, to build these street "views. The cameras are usually mounted on the top of the vehicle.

This is where the entertainment of this entry begins. Things are kind of funny when something gets knocked askew. Things are even funnier when they happen with photographic evidence. I only wish it were a video camera on top of the car this time.

Actually, I don’t read a whole lot of anything on paper, but apparently a company that builds an organizer/aggregator seems to be doing pretty well.

It just secured another round of funding from VC, and from the screen shots, looks to have put together a nice application.

I came across this post from Engadget the other day and just barely found time to pass it along.

It's about an "OS" that replicates the interaction made famous by the movie "Minority Report". There's also a pretty in depth video to go with it, although the music that's used in the background is a little too esoteric.

It's pretty impressive. I would install it as an add-on to just about any operating system out there, if it were available.

I suppose I can't let this election go without posting at least one interesting politically charged topic go by.

One of the proposals out on the table, I won't mention who is championing it by name, is that we tax people who make more than $250,000 more heavily.

I found this article, on the Fortune Magazine's website, that gives a perspective on who these "rich" people are.

I'm always worried when plans that come up that make those who work hard and excel pay extra for working hard and excelling. Don't they deserve fair treatment at the very least?

You should also look closely at the chart of the distribution of the amount of taxes paid by the higher income brackets. Taxes are already largely disproportionately paid by the upper brackets.

Crib Safety Recall

The Greatest American Hero

It has some pretty good info about a Greatest American Hero movie set to begin filming in 2009. In conjunction with the film, some animated episodes and "comic" novels will be release towards the end of this year.

It's kind of fun when the people, who were kids at the same time I was, decide to make movies based on stuff that was cool when I was a kid. It's like getting to live my childhood over again, except I can drive. Legally, that is.

Microsoft is getting on the free stuff bandwagon with the SearchPerks program.

All you have to do is sign-up, let them watch you via small application (assuming you don't mind that sort of thing), and you get "tickets" as a reward for each search. Up to 25 tickets per day.

This kind of like Skee-ball for searching.

I think I'll test try it out. More on what I find later.

It rides a unicycle.

That's it.

I can't figure out why anyone would want want of these. I think it would be far cheaper and healthier to buy your own unicycle.

On my "cool electronic lawn mowing dog" scale, this gets a low 1.5, because it does almost nothing to further the dream of the electronic lawn mowing dog.

I was watching the Presidential Debate yesterday, and Senator McCain mentioned a website that lets you know what people in the Legislative Branch are adding the most line item spending items (a.k.a Pork Barrel Spending).

The site lets you sum up the amount spent in each bill by individual, state, party, or the entire legislative branch. The numbers are astronomical.

I recommend you look over what the people who represent you have been doing with your money.

At long last, T-Mobile has brought out a good competitor to the iPhone.

It's called the G1. It's based on the Android OS by Google, and looks to have a good set of features that makes you actually want to use the darned thing.

It's designed to let you decide what you want to put on your phone, not what Apple wants you to put on your phone.

Oh yeah, and it's hundreds of dollars less than the iPhone.

If you want a lot more information, you can watch the press conference. It's boring, but it still has the most info on the G1 out there.

Well, you know I can't resist an entry about a cool robot.

This one is kind of like a Roomba, only useful.

It can wander around your house, has a camera that you can adjust the vantage point and allows you to command and get telemetry from a web browser.

It's called the Rovio, and it's really going to be quite affordable ($299 U.S.).

I'm one step closer to the Electronic Lawn Mowing dog...except this one doesn't mow the lawn.

I saw this post on a product that allows you to attach a USB Dongle to your relatively new Intel x86 machine and install the retail version of Mac OSX.

I've always said for years that if Mac would sell OSX it would start to take a bigger chunk of the personal computer market. But does Mac listen to me, nope!

The Japanese apparently aren't keen on the iPhone. Apple has sold about 1/10th of what they've sold in the United States.

This makes me wonder if they're smarter than we are, have already cooler stuff, or just don't get the sublime nature of the iPhone. I'm thinking it's one of the first two personally.

I don't like being the M$ cheerleader. But I've been using M$ stuff like Office, Windows, SQL Server, Visual Studio, etc., for years.

For the most part I've been pretty happy with their stuff. Sometimes there are bugs, sometimes it's missing something that I'd really like to have. If it's bad I go looking for an alternative. Usually M$ catches up with the curve.

To Twitter or not to Twitter...

I actually finished my Twitter experiment about 3 weeks ago. I haven't had a chance to write about it until now. I bet you've all been on pins and needles.

Here's the poop:

Pros:
If you want to really get to know someone and how they really spend their time, this is definitely a good way to do it. If they're faithful to the motto "tweet everything", then you'll be able to enjoy the ins and outs of their lives.

You also have the ability to get the stream of consciousness of large segments of people. Be they friends or your target market. I liken this to the band with a loyal following of fans who might want to see an impromptu performance be it a local club or online web cast.

Cons:
If you don't have a piece of technology that you keep with you all the time, you won't really get the full effect. I found that the mobile interface was great with my smart phone. But my wife pointed out that if you weren't tethered by something that had ready access, you weren't apt to go out of your way to tweet about the minutia.

It's also quite hard to decide whether to tweet before you go do something or after. Is it important to get the play by play or the synopsis of the thing you just did?

There's also the concern about privacy. You have to be careful who's following your tweets. For example you want to tweet that you're going out for the night. If you've left enough info about yourself lying around you may have a complete stranger decide to steal your stuff, because he knows you're gone. (I know a paranoid viewpoint, but stranger things have happened.)

Also, the Twitter web site/backbone seems to get "stuck" sometimes. It seems to get bogged down and unresponsive during peak usage. Only I'm not sure when that is, because it happened sporadically.

In total:
I stopped using Twitter after the experiment, because I ran out of stuff to tweet about. Nobody really wanted to know when I went to the bathroom. However, the things I learned about the people I was following was pretty neat. It was eye opening to see the rhythm of their lives.

I would also like to give special thanks to Brookie & Janae. They were kind enough to test it out with me, and it made it a much more worthwhile experience.

In my experimentation with Twitter I've created a Facebook account (gave into peer pressure). It's actually be a pretty good experience. I've found a lot of family/friends with relatively little detective work involved. It's like you're supposed to find people on Facebook or something.

It's also worthy to note that you can use Twitter on the Facebook page to update your whereabouts. I'll post something more in depth on both Twitter & Facebook in a short bit. I just want to make sure I give both sites/services a proper run through.

Hello All,

I've come across this service called Twitter. It's kind of like a way to mini-blog your life.

The idea is that you send 140 character (maximum) updates on your whereabouts, activities, and day dreams. People can "follow" you and you can "follow" others. And hopefully along the way people get to know you better by what you decide are important activities to twitter (not sure that should be a verb) about. Then you get to know what affects people in a daily unobtrusive way.

I'm trying to decide if it's technology that makes life better or noisier. I'm going to experiment with when and how to twitter and whether or not it's only useful for someone in high school.

In attempt to be fair about it, I'm going to try using it for 2 weeks and report back on the experiment.

Here's where I need your help. I would like to follow and be followed. It would be nice to have other experimenters try it out. And since following myself would be weird, I was hoping a few of you would like to see if it's worth the trouble to catalog your lives.

I know that training your kids to do interesting party tricks is a favorite pastime of parents, but if you could teach your kids to be this obedient, the world would be a more civilized place.

I came across this article and realized that there are a million uses for our everyday technology that we haven't even begun to tap into.

Why don't we live in a constant state of MacGyver-ness? Is the everyday ballpoint pen being used to its fullest potential? Are you sure you can use your shoe laces as some sort of grocery carrying device?

I think we short change ourselves when forget that the items we use everyday can transform into something extraordinary.

For those of you who know me well, you know that I have dreamed of one day owning an electronic, lawn-mowing dog. Nay I even daresay that I've prayed for one.

For 2 reasons:

First, how cool would that be? No muss, no fuss and a great looking lawn all the time.

My dream will come to fruition. The next step towards that dream has arrived.

I would have gotten to go on vacation on the school's dollar all in the name of science.

I just saw this documentary on the future production of food crops. It's an eye opener. Large seed companies have patented genetically altered strains of common food crops and then sued independent farmers for patent infringement when strains of the altered crops appear in the farmers fields. I don't usually endorse a movie unless I think it's really well done, or has some sort of interesting twist or aspect to it.

We recently watched Amazing Grace (2006). It's a movie about William Wilberforce, who was a British abolitionist from the late 1700's.

It was really well acted, and written. I expected this show to be somewhat boring as I don't usually go for historical movies, but this one was pretty engaging.

I highly recommend renting it.

As part of a project I worked on, we had to document clinical study drugs.

Often these studies included control & test medication. The control drug is usually a very well documented drug like aspirin or ibuprofen. Sometimes it's a placebo. Placebos are not usually accepted as a standard practice for treating medical maladies.

Why not my tooth brush?

As I was looking for something meaningful to blog about, I realize it's more meaningful to blog about things that are meaningful to me. Oddly enough, my toothbrush is a topic that merits at least one post.

It is a Crest Spin Brush Pro. I'm not sure why Crest decided to add the "Pro" designation. That seems to insist that there people who only brush their teeth recreationally or with some sort of amateur status. Nevertheless, I believe the pro version means that all portions of the toothbrush head oscillate and not just part of it.

When my wife first got it for me, I was a little skeptical, because putting anything with a motor into my mouth has generally been frowned upon my entire life. But she usually has good judgement, so I decided to go with it this time.

I haven't tried other models, but this one in particular did a great job at cleaning my teeth. Afterwards, my teeth felt polished. It somewhat the same feeling as if I had just come from a dental visit. The big difference is that I get to use toothpaste that doesn't taste like mint sandpaper.

I would recommend at least this model to anyone looking for a good motorized/electric toothbrush. Since using it my dentists/dental assistants have commented that I've done a great job keeping my teeth clean. Although I will have to attribute some of these results to a regular habit of flossing.

I recently tried out Second Life. Here are a few thoughts I have about the experience:

I still haven't figured out how to get off the first Island. Now, running around on an island where people are just changing their clothes and hair for 45 minutes is not my idea of entertainment.

My avatar looks nothing like me despite working on it for quite a while:

Whereas my Yahoo Avatar much more resembles me in real life. I even think my Yahoo avatar has a lot more charisma.

I know this game is supposed to be a revolutionary way to interact with others across the planet as if they were really there. But…they're not, and you're not. I'll try it out a couple of more times before I give my official opinion.
